Do You Intentionally Lay Up?
Over the weekend I had the opportunity to golf with a dear friend of mine. I love golf, I enjoy the mix of difficulty and time outdoors, but my friend - LOVES golf. He plays with regularity and understands the game differently than I do (he is a scratch golfer).
We were talking about the game and how I could improve my own scores and he said something to me that resonated deeply;
“Most golfers try to hit it as hard as they can every time. I try to hit it to 100 yards out because I trust my shot at 100 a lot more than I do at 60/50/40. I intentionally lay up.”
As leaders, this is something many of us should wrestle with:
What am I doing to give myself the best possible chance for success?
What’s my best shot?
I think comparison and competition with others often push us to do things that our outside our own normal scope. Trying to be the church down the street, or comparing ourselves to something we saw on Instagram.
While I’m sure what someone else is doing is great, the truth is - that may not be your best shot.
Determine what the goal for your organization is - what you want to accomplish. Then figure out what the best move is for you to accomplish that - considering what gifts and skills YOU have to accomplish the mission.
Maybe your best move is to intentionally lay up.
