A Dog Found Us
It was just over two weeks ago when this young pup started showing up to my mom’s house. My mom fed him (because she is who she is), and next thing you know the pup is living rent-free on her porch.
Through a series of what we believed were God nudges we ended up bringing that dog home with us. My kids named him Bruce Wayne and instantly our little family of five grew by one.
Karen (my wife) and I wouldn’t have ever started out the week by saying we were going to be bringing a dog home. Actually, we were never going to have a dog again. We were sure of it. Yet, now, this adopted member of our family is sleeping on our bedroom floor.
Why is all of this relevant to you?
Well, first, everyone loves a good dog story.
Second, (and more importantly) I think there is an important leadership lesson in this whole story:
Being open to God means being open to anything.
Even (or maybe especially) the things you had originally ruled out.
Jesus can’t be Lord of your life if you are telling Him what you will or won’t do. Instead, a posture of openness might just be what the Lord is calling you to live towards.
Do I know why God wanted us to have a dog? No.
Is it messy? Absolutely.
Has he already changed our family? Definitely.
Saying yes, and not knowing the outcome. That might be my new favorite definition of walking by faith.
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)
For we live by faith, not by sight.
