4 Physical Conditions That Lead to Bad Decision Making
With hundreds of people on this email list, it is easy to forget that we may not know each other that well. If you’ve ever heard me preach or teach one of the things that I am very open about is how God continues to refine my natural inclination to have an addictive personality.
I know that I am either all in or all out. I don’t live very well in the middle. And it is that mentality that oftentimes gets me in trouble. I like to make decisions on the spot, and I just want to get things off my list. Once I start a project I want to finish it right away. Makes me a little impulsive at times, and on more than one occasion has made my job harder than it needs to be.
Maybe your like me, and you’ve wrestled with this all-or-nothing mentality, or maybe you are a different breed and live well in the gray. Either way, I’ve learned that my physical disposition has a profound impact on my ability to make good - Spirit-led decisions.
Today, I wanted to share with you the four physical conditions (an acronym) that should should slow down the decision making process:
Hungry
Angry
Lonely
Tired
Some of us just read the list and said, “I’m always AT LEAST one of those things!” And I get it, in leadership it’s near impossible to find a perfect scenario for making Spirit-led decisions. However, it is important to be mindful of what’s happening phsyically before we make a decision that might make our situation worse.
Romans 12:1-2 says it like this:
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
We cannot afford to separate the physical nature of our bodies, from the mental capacity of our emotions.
In leadership, the most dangerous leader is the one who doesn’t know they aren’t in a good spot.
Pay attention to how you are feeling, and if you are in one of the four circumstances stated above HALT!
